Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi passed away on Monday at the age of 77. A close family friend confirmed that Doshi breathed his last in London, where he had been residing.
Doshi, known for his late entry into international cricket, made his Test debut for India in 1979 at the age of 32 and went on to play 33 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) until 1983. He claimed 114 wickets in Tests, including six five-wicket hauls, and secured 22 wickets in ODIs.
Before his international stint, Doshi had a prolific domestic career that began in the 1968–69 season. Over the years, he featured in 238 first-class matches, amassing an impressive 898 wickets. He represented Bengal and Saurashtra during his time in Indian domestic cricket.Following the day’s play in the ongoing Leeds Test on Monday, Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara paid tribute to Doshi, remembering him as “a gem of a person.” Pujara also recalled his insightful conversations with the veteran spinner during his county cricket days with Sussex.Doshi is survived by a son and a daughter.
