In response to the Air India plane crash, insurance companies have established help desks at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to expedite compensation for victims’ families, following directions from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
Despite missing documents, claims are being processed as long as the victim’s name appears on the official casualty list.
Speeding Up Without Paperwork
A representative from a private life insurance company said, “Even if no documents are available, we’re moving forward with claims if the name is on the official list. In cases where both the insured and nominee have died, we are working to avoid legal delays and settle them as quickly as possible.”
Insurance providers like LIC, HDFC, Tata, Bajaj, and New India Insurance have set up counters. Claims are being filed not only by passengers’ families but also by people injured or killed in the vicinity of the BJ Medical College hostel, near the crash site.
Progress on Claims
Prakash Khanchandani, administration officer at New India Assurance, reported receiving seven claims so far. “Five are from group insurance policies, and three of those have already been settled. The remaining two are marine cargo claims—one for ₹6.5 lakh and another for ₹5 lakh. The ₹6.5 lakh claim has been settled,” he said. Overall, four of the seven claims have been processed and cleared.
