The Election Commission announced on Sunday morning, May 25, that by-elections for five assembly seats in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab, and West Bengal will be held on June 19. The counting of votes will take place on June 23, 2025. These seats became vacant due to either resignation or the death of sitting members.
The elections in Gujarat will be held in the Kadi and Visavadar constituencies. Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana in Punjab, and Kaliganj in West Bengal will also go to the polls.
By-Elections 2025
The gazette notification will be issued on May 26. The notification stated that the last date for nominations is June 2, the last date for scrutiny of nominations is June 3, and the last date for candidate withdrawals is June 5.
While two assembly by-polls will be held in Gujarat, one each will take place in Kerala, West Bengal and Punjab. In Gujarat, the bypoll to the Kadi seat was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki. Another bypoll to the Visavadar seat in the state is taking place due to the resignation of sitting member Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai.
In Kerala, a by-election will be held in the Nilambur seat because P V Anvar has resigned. In Punjab, the Ludhiana seat is going to a bypoll after the death of the sitting MLA, Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. In West Bengal, a by-election will be held in the Kaliganj seat due to the death of the current MLA, Nasiruddin Ahamed.
