Actor Mukul Dev, widely recognized for his work in Hindi, Punjabi, and South Indian cinema as well as on television, has passed away at the age of 54. The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet.
Vindu Dara Singh paid tribute on social media, tweeting, “Rest in peace my brother #MukulDev ! The time spent with you will always be cherished and #SonOfSardaar2 will be your swansong where you will spread joy and happiness to the viewers and make them fall down laughing!”
A media report quoted a source close to the family stating, “After his parent’s death, Mukul was keeping to himself. He would even step out of the house or meet anyone. His health deteriorated in the last few days and he was in the hospital. My condolences to his brother and everyone who knew and loved him. He was an amazing person, and we will all miss him.”
Actor Manoj Bajpayee also expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “It’s impossible to put into words what I’m feeling. Mukul was a brother in spirit, an artist whose warmth and passion were unmatched. Gone too soon, too young. Praying for strength and healing for his family and everyone grieving this loss. Miss you meri jaan…until we meet again, Om Shanti.”
Remembering Mukul Dev
Born on 17 September 1970 in New Delhi, Mukul Dev made his television debut in 1996 with Mumkin and entered films the same year with Dastak, starring alongside Sushmita Sen. His versatile performances earned him roles across multiple languages including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam.
Some of his most memorable films include Yamla Pagla Deewana, Son of Sardaar, R… Rajkumar, and Jai Ho. An alumnus of St. Columba’s School, he also held a certificate in aeronautics from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Aviation in Raebareli.
In a 2021 interview with Hindustan Times, he described his 25-year journey in the industry as fulfilling. He said, “Even if I want to, I cannot complain… It is very satisfying… I think I have done pretty alright for myself. It is not too bad at all.”
Reflecting on his career, he shared, “Somehow over the years as an actor I have, without me knowing it, managed to create a space for myself… I could see the reason why they called me for it.”
Mukul Dev’s contribution to Indian cinema and television will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
