The Sabarmati River is set to be emptied from today (May 12) to June 5 across the riverfront due to maintenance work. One of the gates at the Vasna barrage will be repaired during the work, and a sand ramp will be built, too.
The stretch of the Sabarmati River flowing from Subhash Bridge to Vasna Barrage will be emptied starting May 12. The cleaning operation will be carried out by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL).
During a cleaning initiative in 2019, over 500 tons of garbage was removed from the river.
Notably, the Sabarmati River is listed among the 13 most polluted rivers in the country. The water is reported to be dangerously contaminated with chemicals, which is unfit for drinking.
