Over 1,500 residents of Ganeshnagar, a resettlement colony near Pirana, are struggling with a serious water crisis after the local borewell stopped working. Now, they depend on water tankers for their daily needs. The colony was set up after 2001 to relocate families displaced by the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project.
Despite repeated requests, the AMC has not approved a new borewell, leaving residents without a steady water source. The delay is reportedly due to pending approvals typically processed through quotation-based work orders.
With the borewell out of service, water tankers are now the only source of supply. Long queues and frequent fights are common, as residents—including children—wait with containers in hand. Many families are even forced to travel to nearby areas to collect water.
Originally, around 170 houses were allotted in Ganeshnagar, but the population has since grown with the rise of unauthorised structures a development that has continued largely unchecked by civic authorities.
Residents say they feel abandoned by the ‘Nal Se Jal’ promises, with no piped water, proper drainage, or consistent municipal attention.
