Ahmedabad has big dreams of hosting the Olympics in the future. To make this a reality, the government plans to improve the city’s sports facilities and public transport. A key initiative is the development of a robust metro network, which will provide easy access for athletes and visitors to the Olympic sports complex. This step reflects the city’s dedication to hosting global events and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
Metro Network Across Indian Cities
Metro connectivity plays a big role in making transportation smooth in big cities. Delhi leads with the largest metro network of 350 kilometers. Bengaluru follows with 74 kilometers, and Hyderabad has 69 kilometers. Ahmedabad stands strong with a 62-kilometer metro network, which is more than cities like Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Nagpur, and Pune. This strong metro presence proves Ahmedabad is serious about improving urban transport for the Olympics and beyond.
Infrastructure Developments for Better Travel
A major project in Ahmedabad is extending the metro to connect Koteshwar to the airport. This new connection will have both elevated and underground parts. From Koteshwar to Taj Circle, the metro will run above the ground. After that, it will go underground, directly reaching the airport terminal. This smart design will help travelers avoid city traffic and reach the airport easily. The airport metro station will also have lifts and escalators for direct access to the terminal, making it very convenient for passengers.
Major Investments to Boost Metro Expansion
Big investments are being made to expand the metro network. A 10-kilometer metro route inside GIFT City is planned at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Also, a 4-kilometer extension from Koteshwar to the airport will be built with an investment of Rs 1,800 crore. These projects are part of the city’s larger plan to make public transport better and support its dream of hosting the Olympics. The government aims to complete Metro Phase-2 by the end of this year, marking an important milestone.
The new metro expansions, particularly the routes linking the airport and GIFT City, highlight Ahmedabad’s plans for a promising future. These developments are aimed not only at the Olympics but also at improving daily travel for residents. Construction on these key routes will begin by the end of this year, paving the way for Ahmedabad to become a modern city ready to welcome the world.
