In a major push for seamless highway travel, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced India will implement a satellite-based toll collection system nationwide within 15 days, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. The GPS-enabled mechanism will automatically deduct charges based on distance traveled, targeting reduced congestion, fuel savings, and faster commutes. “Vehicles will be tracked through satellite, and the toll will be deducted directly from the bank account linked with the vehicle,” Gadkari said, framing it as part of India’s road infrastructure modernization. The policy aims to address chronic toll plaza delays, with trials already validating 93% accuracy in fee calculation.
