As part of the Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS), in partnership with Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), introduced a ‘Cool Bus Stop’ at Lal Darwaja (platforms 7 and 8) on Tuesday, using ‘khus curtains.’
According to a statement, this location was chosen as it is highly exposed to direct sunlight and serves around 3,000 commuters daily. The bus stop features khus curtains made from dried vetiver grass, which help naturally cool the area by acting as a barrier to hot and cool air.
A high-pressure mist cooling system releases tiny water droplets that absorb heat, lowering temperatures by 6-7°C and making the waiting area more comfortable.
“The system is energy-efficient, consuming less electricity than traditional air conditioners, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, making it an eco-friendly cooling solution,” the statement said. The bus stop also includes smart features like a timer panel, water- and electricity-saving mechanisms, and a dust suppression system to improve air quality for commuters.
The launch event was attended by Mayor Pratibhaben Jain, Standing Committee Chairperson Hemant Parmar, AMTS Chairman Dharamshibhai Desai, and Mahila Housing Trust Programme Manager Dipika Vadgama.
