The six-lane barrage-cum-bridge on the Sabarmati River, part of Phase 2 of the Sabarmati Riverfront Project, is set to be completed by April 2027. The bridge will connect Acher on the west bank to Camp Sadar Bazar on the east bank, significantly improving connectivity and easing congestion in key areas like Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, and Hansol.
The project, overseen by the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), has been awarded to Rajkamal Builders Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. at a contract value of ₹239.92 crore. Civil construction, including soil investigation and riverbed preparation, is already underway, while the bridge’s structural design is pending final approval from the Gujarat Road and Building Department.
A key highlight of the project is the air-filled rubber barrage, the first of its kind in Gujarat, which will be supplied and maintained by YOOIL Envirotech Private Limited, a South Korean firm. This ₹53.78 crore barrage will help regulate river flow and ensure water availability up to Gandhinagar, particularly during maintenance of the Narmada Main Canal. The installation of the rubber membrane is scheduled to begin after the civil work is completed post-monsoon in 2026.
Spanning over a kilometre, the six-lane bridge will feature approach roads from the Riverfront on both sides, ensuring smooth connectivity to the main structure. A unique feature is the 3-meter-wide pedestrian footpath with tensile roofing, allowing unobstructed views of the river.
Additionally, 10-meter-wide lock gates will be installed on both riverbanks to facilitate water transportation and decorative lighting. Once operational, the barrage-cum-bridge will not only enhance traffic flow but also play a crucial role in water management, reinforcing Ahmedabad’s urban infrastructure development.
