Gujarat High Court bans glass-coated kite strings

The Gujarat High Court today clarified that not only Chinese kite strings but also glass-coated kite strings are prohibited for flying kites. The court specified that the production, sale, use, and purchase of cotton threads coated with glass powder (glass-coated strings) are banned.

Typically, cotton cords are coated with glass powder to enhance sharpness, posing risks to humans, birds, and animals. Considering this, the court has directed the government to take strict action in this regard, enabling the police to act against the production, sale, and use of glass-coated strings.

During an earlier hearing on this matter before the bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi, the affidavit filed by the government stated that a notification was issued by the Home Department on December 24, 2024, banning the manufacture, sale, and use of Chinese, nylon, or plastic-coated cords in view of the Uttarayan 2025 festival. Following this notification, circulars have been distributed at district and taluka levels to ensure compliance, and implementation is already underway.

The state government has assured the court that it will take concrete and effective steps to ensure strict compliance with the order by January 13. Further hearings on this case are scheduled for January 13
