The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) cancelled the Kankaria Carnival following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The AMC will also announce revised dates for the Ahmedabad International Flower Show, which is to be held on Sabarmati Riverfront. The annual fest which had started from December 25 and was to continue till 31 has been cancelled Friday onwards, according to the officials.
“In the wake of the demise of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singhji whose contributions will be remembered by the country, a seven-day national mourning has been declared. Thus, the Kankaria Carnival has been cancelled from Friday,” Mayor Pratibha Jain told The Indian Express.
An average footfall of more than 20 lakh is recorded at the week-long annual carnival. According to the authorities, over 2 lakh visitors had attended the carnival in the last two days.
Following the cancellation of the events, compensation and reimbursements will be decided by a special committee.
