Last year, 7.42 lakh tourists visited the popular destination
The number of visitors to the Kutch Rann Utsav has been steadily increasing over the past three years. Gujarat Tourism sources indicate that due to enhanced facilities and new attractions, bookings for Rann Utsav 2024 have been strong. They estimate tourist numbers to rise by 25 to 30 percent this year compared to last year when 7.42 lakh tourists visited. This year, the number is projected to exceed 10 lakh.
This year, the Rannotsav will run from December 1 to February 28, with the tent city operational from November 11 to March 15, welcom- ing tourists from India and abroad. The White Desert, once known as arid land, has become the main attraction of the Kutch Rann Utsav.
According to Gujarat Tourism sources, tourist numbers to the White Desert have surged dramatically. In 2011, visitor numbers were 0.62 lakh, increasing to 4.66 lakh in 2017-18-a 657% rise. While numbers fluctuated in the following years, with a dip dur- ing the Covid period (4.26 lakh in 2018-19, 3.50 lakh in 2019-20, and just 1.72 lakh in 2020-21), the trend has reversed. The past three years have seen a steady climb: 1.81 lakh in 2021-22, 3.45 lakh in 2022-23, and 7.42 lakh in 2023-24. This figure is estimated to reach 10 lakh in 2024-25.
Focus on sustainability
This year, Rann Utsav focuses on sustainable tourism with initiatives such as minimising plastic use, promoting bicycle rides to the White Desert and implementing waste segregation and disposal in the Tent City. Travel itineraries will be available for tourists.
Major attractions
The main attraction of the Rannotsav is the Tent City. This year, around 400 tents, equipped with facilities comparable to 3-star hotels/ resorts, have been set up in the White Desert. Guests can enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the salt-white desert, immerse themselves in folk culture, and savour traditional cuisine. Cultural programmes and adventure sports activities are also organised.
