Residents of Shilaj are fed up with sewage water logging that has persisted for the past week, causing significant inconvenience. Fearing waterborne illnesses like malaria due to exposure to contaminated water, they have complained to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), but to no avail.
Residents of Shivalay Shikhar Apartments in Shilaj say they have lodged multiple complaints with the AMC, but the problem remains unresolved even after seven days.
The residents complain of a broken sewage line that is causing waste water to overflow into the fields next to their society, turning them into a foul-smelling swamp. This has made their lives miserable, as they are unable to even venture out onto their balconies.
About 15 societies in the area have been grappling with sewage water logging for the past week. Many of these communities face the same problem Shreyansh Jain, a resident of Shivalay Shikhar Apartments, told Mirror, “We aren’t able to leave our homes due to the stinking sewage water. We can’t even go for morning walks because of this issue.”
He added, “Moreover, we also fear that children and the elderly might contract malaria due to the logged sewage water next to our society. We have been complaining to the AMC, but no action has been taken.”
In their letter to the AMC, the residents also highlighted the recurring issue of water logging in their locality during every rainy season. They also mentioned the increased mosquito breeding in their area, expressing concerns about the spread of diseases.
An AMC official said, “Yes, the main drainage line has been damaged due to ongoing flyover work by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). It will take three more days to repair it, and the problem should be resolved by then. We have deployed pumps to remove the sewage water from the field.”
