The Gandhi Ashram redevelopment in Ahmedabad is ushering in a wave of urban transformation, affecting thousands of residents and visitors daily. Sabarmati Ashram, a significant historical site attracting 2,000-5,000 visitors on weekdays and up to 15,000 during weekends, is being redesigned into a “world-class memorial.” As part of this project, an 800-metre stretch of Ashram Road connecting key city arteries has been permanently closed, altering traffic dynamics and sparking civic concerns among locals and commuters alike. The project aims to restore the Ashram’s original expanse of 55 acres from its current 5 acres, integrating historical structures into a unified precinct.
Residents living near the newly diverted routes are grappling with disruptions. Suryanagar Society and surrounding colonies report dust pollution, increased vehicle flow, and snapped water connections caused by the sudden rise in traffic. Many homeowners have resorted to temporary measures such as installing curtains and sprinkling water to mitigate dust storms. For others, including children and pedestrians, the lack of speed breakers and increased vehicular speed have raised safety concerns. Residents are planning formal representations to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for necessary interventions.
From a sustainability perspective, the project’s ambition to preserve historical structures and reclaim lost heritage is commendable. However, urban planning challenges have overshadowed these goals. Temporary parking, alternate routes, and security measures address immediate needs but fail to tackle the broader ecological and civic impact. Dust mitigation strategies and eco-friendly road materials could improve environmental outcomes, reducing the redevelopment’s adverse effects on air quality.
As the city reorients its urban landscape, questions around balancing heritage preservation with civic convenience persist. For tourists, the revamped Ashram promises an enriched cultural experience, but for local communities, the disruptions highlight the ongoing struggle between development and sustainability. Authorities must address these concerns to ensure inclusive growth while honouring Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy.
