he desire for that special registration number often has vehicle owners shell out huge sums. In a choice number auction held recently at the Subhash Bridge RTO, a four-wheeler registration plate with the number 5000 fetched Rs 3.66 lakh. Sources from the RTO also revealed that popular “gold category” numbers like 1111 and 0001 were sold above their base prices.
Some numbers are in high demand among vehicle owners. An RTO official shared, “People are often ready to spend lakhs for specific registration numbers for their cars and two-wheelers. To cater to this demand, the RTO classifies certain numbers as ‘gold’ and ‘silver’ and holds online auctions for these numbers with each new series release.”
The auction last week was for selected numbers in the GJ-01-WV series for four-wheelers. According to sources, number 5000 attracted the highest bid at Rs 3.66 lakh. Meanwhile, 0009 sold for Rs 95,500 while 0022 went for Rs 55,000. Gold category numbers 1111 and 0001 were auctioned above base prices.
In a similar auction in September, the popular 1111 number saw bids reaching Rs23 lakh, though it was finally sold in this WV series for Rs 41,000, just slightly above its base price of Rs 40,000.
