A police complaint has been filed against the OTT film Maharaj, starring Aamir Khan’s son. The film, which is based on the Maharaj Libel case of 1862, is facing allegations that it misrepresents historical events and has the potential to incite religious sentiments. The complaint demands that an offense be registered under Section 295 of the IPC.
Ashish Shah of Vadodara submitted the application, naming the writer of the novel Maharaj, Saurabh Shah, its publishers R R Seth and Co Pvt Ltd, Yash Raj Films, Netflix India, the film’s director, and the actors and technicians involved in the film’s production. The complainant alleges that the film concerns the followers of Pushtimarg devotees and portrays history in a misleading manner.
Shah claimed that the film’s portrayal of the Maharaj Libel case, a controversial case that emphasised the need for investigation into allegations against religious leaders, could spread rumors against religious leaders and institutions.
