How often should adults check their BP levels?

It is recommended by the doctors that adults between the ages of 18 and 40 have their blood pressure checked every three years. This routine check is important for detecting any potential underlying health issues and allows for quicker diagnosis and treatment if needed, said doctors on Tuesday.

A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (ICMR-NCDIR) in Bengaluru found that approximately 30 percent of Indians have never had their blood pressure tested.

“Individuals older than 40 years should undergo blood pressure screenings annually. For those aged between 18 and 40 years, screenings are recommended every three to five years unless they are considered high-risk,” stated Dr. Tushar Tayal, Lead Consultant at the Department of Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, during an interview with the media.

“Dr. Ajay Agarwal, Director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital, Noida, recommends that all hypertensive patients should monitor their blood pressure at least once a month using a digital BP monitor. It’s ideal to take the measurement after 15 minutes of rest with the cuff tied to the mid-arm,” advised Dr. Agarwal.

He explained that in patients with- out risk factors, blood pressure must be below 140/90 mm Hg. And among those with risk factors such as diabetes or kidney disease to reduce the risk of target organ damage (in kidneys, heart, or eyes), it should be less than 130/80, Dr Ajay told correspondent.

The study also showed that about 34 per cent of Indians are in the prehypertensive stage – an intermediate state between normal blood pressure and hypertension. The research showed it is equally concerning, as it contributed substantially to cardiovascular diseases.

“It is important to check BP and keep it under control (with or without medication) because undiagnosed hypertension is a risk factor for stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, and eye damage,” Dr Tushar said.
