Alcohol and other intoxicating substances have always been illegal in the ‘dry state’ Gujarat. However, the state has witnessed seizure of ₹21,061 worth liquor, and other 21 types of intoxicated substances in the last three years.
As per the data provided by the home department, the police has seized a total of 1.85 cr foreign liquor bottles and over 20 lakh bottles of beer in the last three years.
Intoxicated substances including ganja or marijuana, charas, MDMA (also known as MD drugs or ecstasy), Ephedrine, opium, heroine, cough syrup, morphin, cocaine and brown sugar (when the quality of heroin is poor, its colour changes to brown from white) has been seized from across the state in large amounts.
In the year 2022-23, ₹15,429.56 worth MD drugs and heroin worth ₹2,315 cr have been seized in Gujarat.
Last year, foreign liquor worth ₹120.41 cr was seized by the police.
Recently, incidents of cough syrup seizures have become a common affair in Gujarat as it contains Codeine phosphate, a drug that contains toxic substances.
In the last three years, cough syrup worth ₹85 lakh was seized by the police.
