A total of 3,000 have been announced for special educators (classes 1-8) including 1,861 for classes 1 to 5 and 1,139 for classes 6 to 8.

With only 188 candidates applying, and the recruitment taking place a year after the advertisement of the recruitment, a demand to increase the age limit for the candidates has shaped up. The current age limit is 40, which is proposed to be increased to 45.

Currently, there are about 1,000 contract-based special educators in government schools.

Following an order of the Supreme Court, the central government had instructed the states to recruit special educators in state schools.

After which the state government had released a notification to recruit teachers for eight out of 21 specially-abled categories of children.

The recruitment involved merit-based selection from TET-1 and TET-2 examination and interview in April 2023.
