The Amdavad Municipal Corporation has decided to install CCTV cameras at 84 locations in the city. it has also emerged that 383 of the 2557 CCTV cameras at over 100 junctions in the city are non-functional.
The CCTVs in the city were installed as part of the AMC’s Smart City project mainly to maintain traffic. But poor coordination between AMC and the traffic department has resulted in poor management of CCTVs.
Now, the civic body has not only taken up the work of installing CCTVS at 84 locations including bridges but also of repairing the non-functioning ones.
It is expected that once all the CCTVS are installed at the 84 locations and the non-functional ones are repaired, it will help control traffic violations as well as aid in crime detection.
A meeting between the Ahmedabad Traffic Police and AMC on the issue of CCTVs concluded recently in which it was decided to repair non-functioning CCTVs.
Several officials including the admin DCP of the traffic department had voiced their concern in the matter. The civic body has also talked of installing CCTVs at 84 locations including roads and bridges in the city.
