The skyrocketing prices of vegetables in the Ahmedabad city are burning a hole in the pockets of common people. Market prices of most vegetables are above Rs 100 per kilogram. Tomatoes are still being sold at a price of Rs 150 per kg, leaving homemakers grappling with the soaring costs of this essential kitchen staple.
Nitin sanghvi a resident of Ahmedabad, said, “In just three days, the cost of vegetables has risen from Rs 270 to Rs 580. The cheapest vegetable is sponge gourd, priced at Rs 54.”
Although there has been some downward trend in prices recently, the retail market continues to experience an upward trend. “The price of ginger, which was Rs 130 to Rs 180 per kg, has come down to Rs 150 to Rs 160 in the wholesale market. However, it has cross Rs 500 in the retail market.”
In early May, the prices of vegetables were not so harsh on the pockets of the homemakers. But as soon as the monsoon arrived, the prices of many vegetables skyrocketed in the city.
