The city police and a local NGO rescued 67 child laborers aged between 11 and 17 from various jewelery shops at a commercial complex in the city’s Kalupur area.
According to an FIR lodged with the Kalupur police, 52-year-old Damini Patel, a resident of Vejalpur, who works with an NGO, received a tip-off that a large number of children were working in jewelery shops at Sahjananand Commercial Complex near Pankor Naka are employed.
Patel along with her team of volunteers and police personnel reached the commercial complex and rescued 67 children from West Bengal from the four-storey building.
These children were forced to work between 10 am to 10 pm, for which they were paid Rs 150 a day. On Patel’s complaint, the Kalupur police have registered a complaint under the IPC for bonded labor and abetment of children, along with charges under the Juvenile Justice Act.
