The Gujarat government has not sent any proposal to the Government of India in the last two years to rename Ahmedabad as Karnavati, the Gujarat Assembly was informed on Friday.
The government provided the information in a written response to a question posed by Congress MLA Amit Chavda. In February, the right-wing Bajrang Dal resurrected its campaign to rename Ahmedabad. In New Delhi, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) passed a resolution renaming the city Karnavati.
Ahmedabad, founded more than 600 years ago by Sultan Ahmed Shah, was designated as India’s first heritage city by UNESCO in July 2017.
