According to data released by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) N. N. Chaudhary on Wednesday, there was a 14% increase in traffic accidents in Ahmedabad city in 2022 compared to the previous year.
At the beginning of the week dedicated to promoting road safety, Chaudhary noted that in 2022, the city experienced 1,447 cases of traffic accidents, of which 462 fatalities occurred. There were 1,231 traffic accidents in 2021, and 403 of them resulted in fatalities.
“Keeping in mind the increasing number of road accidents, the traffic safety week is being organised to spread awareness and decrease cases of road accidents,” Chaudhary told mediapersons.
Sessions will be held throughout the week to raise awareness among autorickshaw drivers, city bus drivers, state bus drivers, and truck drivers. Additionally, he said, there will be discussions about traffic safety with schoolchildren.
“The majority of fatal accidents involve two-wheeler riders, especially those who do not wear helmets,” said Ahmedabad Road Transport Officer Ruturaj Desai. All accidents occur as a result of disregard for traffic regulations, such as the wearing of seat belts and helmets. The majority of calls to 108 emergencies are for traffic accidents.
