The Gujarat government intends to appoint M Thennarasan, a senior IAS officer, as the new Commissioner of the AMC.
The state government has finalised his name, and his appointment to the top job will be announced soon.
Lochan Sehra, who was transferred last week, will be succeeded by Thennarasan. Ahmedabad Collector Sandip Sagale is currently in charge of the AMC’s administration. Thennarasan currently serves as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

He also has experience as deputy commissioner of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation from 2013 to 2015 and commissioner of the geology and mining department from 2015-16. Later, he was appointed as the commissioner and secretary to the Government of Gujarat in the department of women and child development.
Thennarasan also headed the Surat Municipal Corporation. Along with the position of MD at the GIDC, he was also holding additional charge of Commissioner of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
While serving as the AMC for three years, Thennarasan was involved in the implementation of the Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System Project and the Sabarmati River Front Project and several other initiatives.
Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Thennarasan has completed his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in Coimbatore and secured 26th rank in the IAS examination.
The name of former Surat Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, who was recently transferred as Vadodara Municipal Commissioner, was also considered for the posting in Ahmedabad.
The AMC Commissioner discharges the executive power of the house. For administrative purposes, the city has been divided into seven zones such as central, east, west, north, south, north-west and south-west and they are further divided into 48 wards.
