On Monday, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) clarified that existing currency and banknotes will be unaffected. Following reports that the Reserve Bank of India was considering replacing Mahatma Gandhi’s face on existing currency and banknotes, the central bank issued a statement clarifying its stance.
“There are reports in certain sections of the media that the Reserve Bank of India is considering changes to the existing currency and banknotes by replacing the face of Mahatma Gandhi with that of others,” the RBI said in a statement.
“It may be noted that there is no such proposal in the Reserve Bank,” the central bank stated.
“RBI clarifies: No change in existing currency and banknotes,” the central bank tweeted.
According to reports, the finance ministry and the Reserve Bank of India were considering using the faces of other prominent Indians, such as Rabindranath Tagore and APJ Abdul Kalam, on banknotes of various denominations.
