With speed demons at full throttle on the new flyovers on the Sarkhej Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, road accidents have become more common on these stretches. The city traffic police have now imposed new speed limits on the highway and its surroundings.
According to Mayank Sinh Chavda, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), eight speed guns with interceptors have been hidden on the SG Highway, Sardar Patel (SP) Ring Road, Sindhu Bhavan Road (SBR), and Naroda Road, which leads up to the highway.
These stretches will have a speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour.
“Any vehicle caught overspeeding by the speed guns will be tracked and fined via e-memo. The fine for the first offence will be Rs 2,000, Rs 4,000 for the second one and thereafter the driving license will be suspended,” said JCP Chavda.
According to the traffic department, officers of the motor vehicle department with a rank higher than deputy director, assistant inspector of the transport department, or officer on special duty in the transport commissionerate will keep an eye out for excessive speeding.
Police officers above the rank of head constable will be stationed at checkpoints for dangerous driving. Officers from the motor vehicle department will also be on the high alert for people with disabilities driving regular vehicles.
