The body of a cashier of a luxury hotel near Magdalla Cross Roads, Surat was discovered stuffed in a bag in the complex’s basement on Monday.
It is suspected that cashier Jivan Raut was murdered with the intent of looting because he used to go to the bank to deposit money.
Viren alias Wahid Saini (30), the hotel’s assistant housekeeping manager, was arrested for alleged involvement in the looting and murder. Police discovered Rs 4.50 lakh in cash in Saini’s desk drawer.
“After killing Raut, the accused went to his room and washed the blood- stained clothes. He took a bath but there were few blood stains on his shoe that he did not remove. He became the prime suspect as soon as cops noticed the stains,” said AP Somaiya, police inspector, Dumas.
Raut’s body was found stuffed in a bag used for packing garbage. His throat was slit using a cutter. The bag was kept in the store room used for laundry and bath products in the basement of the hotel.
It’s suspected that Raut was attacked in the basement when he was leaving with cash to deposit it in the bank. A hotel staff that went to the storeroom noticed the bag and alerted colleagues. Later, the hotel management called the police
Police suspect that the deceased was killed between 1.30 to 3 pm. The accused knew Raut’s routine and that he used to go to the bank with cash in a shoulder bag. Police suspect involvement of one more person but identity of the accused is yet not clear.
Cops are still trying to gather details based on preliminary investigation. .
