Mahashivratri is being celebrated across the country today. On this day, devotees worship Lord Shiva, the destroyer of evil.
According to Hindu mythology, the Lord performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction on this day, also known as Shiv Tandav. Mahashivratri is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of the Falgun month according to the Hindu calendar.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were said to have married on this day. On this day, people fast in order to find suitable life partners. The major Indian festival, which is celebrated across the country, also commemorates “overcoming darkness and ignorance in life.”
This festival has been celebrated since the fifth century. Har-ratri is the name given to this festival in parts of Kashmir.
In Uttar Pradesh, a large number of people are flocking to Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath temple to pray. Devotees also take holy dips in the Ganges. Devotees are taking holy dips at Sangam in Prayagraj.
People began praying early this morning after decorating temples. Most Lord Shiva temples in the country have long queues of devotees.
M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President, has greeted people on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Mr Naidu stated in a tweet that Mahashivratri is celebrated with great fervour and zeal throughout the country. On this day, may Lord Shiva shower us with his divine blessings and guide us to the path of righteousness, unity, peace, and prosperity, he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed best wishes to people on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. In a tweet, Mr Modi hoped that Lord Mahadev will bless everyone.
