The state government has stated before the high court that a draught bill to address the city’s stray cattle problem is being prepared and will be introduced into law as soon as possible.
The government lawyer made the submission in response to public interest litigation (PIL) that sought a complete ban on stray cattle and harsh penalties for violators. The state government, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority were served with notices by the court (AUDA). The next hearing is set for March 2nd.
Nilay Patel, an attorney, had filed a petition. He claimed that most cattle owners do not feed their animals and instead leave them to fend for themselves on the roads. Plastic, garbage, and other non-edible materials are then consumed by the cattle. Such individuals put the lives of their fellow citizens in danger.
Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, it is everyone’s responsibility to look after any pet or animal entrusted to them while ensuring that they are not harmed.
