The Sadar Bazar, a civil area within the Ahmedabad cantonment, may soon come under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The Ministry of Defence has decided to transfer all civil areas within the country’s 62 cantonment boards to local municipal bodies, and has written to the military headquarters in Delhi for their opinion. Once the ministry’s decision is implemented, the Sadar Bazaar will soon be part of the AMC.
The ministry had on November 30, 2021, written to the military headquarter in Delhi about the notified civil areas in the 62 cantonment boards across the country. Ahmedabad Mirror has accessed the letter.
For several years, there have been discussions about transferring these civil areas to municipal corporations. According to Ahmedabad cantonment board nominated member Vijay Yadav, in 2018, Shambhunath Tundiya, a Rajya Sabha MP, visited the Ahmedabad Cantonment Board and submitted a report stating that the camp Sadar Bazar area should be with the corporation.
“At that time, board member Sumer Rajput had assisted in preparing a report about the living conditions in the 42 acre Sadar Bazar area,” said Yadav.
Better civic amenities for the 2,500 families who live in the Sadar Bazar area were recommended in the report. If the ministry’s decision is carried out, the AMC will be in charge of the Sadar Bazar.
