A smartphone and free WiFi helped a coolie from Kerala pass the civil services exam. Sreenath K, a Kerala coolie, passed the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) state services exam and then the UPSC civil services exam despite a lack of resources.
Sreenath, a native of Kerala’s Munnar district, began his career as a coolie in Ernakulam. In 2018, however, he realised that his earnings were simply insufficient to cover his family’s future expenses. Sreenath did not want his financial constraints to limit his daughter’s future opportunities.
He started working in double shifts but even then he could barely make Rs 400-500 a day. Things looked tough but Sreenath had the will to change his situation.
Sreenath began studying for the civil services exam, but due to a lack of funds, he was unable to pay high tutor fees. That’s when his smartphone stepped in to save the day. Sreenath started watching online lectures on his smartphone instead of paying for expensive coaching and study materials.
