Born at 26 weeks, premature baby weighing just 750 gms beats odds to survive
Usually, parents are very conscious about the health of the newborn baby and in most cases, the baby is in good health if it is born with enough weight. But sometimes when a baby is born prematurely it is underdeveloped and its health can be endangered due to its low birth weight. In most cases, a premature baby is nonviable because of no immunity and a weak respiratory system.
Recently a premature baby girl weighing just 750 grams was discharged healthy at GCS Hospital after 65 days of treatment. Mother Sonalben Korat was admitted to GCS Hospital on 9th September for cesarean delivery with breakage in the uterus during the sixth month. Where Sonalben gave birth to a baby girl weighing only 750 grams.
The parents, along with the doctors, understood the seriousness of the matter as she was born extremely prematurely at 26 weeks of pregnancy. GCS Hospital’s Paediatrics and NICU department started working hard to fight for the child’s health and treated her with extra care.
The baby girl had been on a non-invasive ventilator for 28 days and 65 days in NICU. Initially, the baby was given breast milk through Ryle’s tube and then slowly spooned and then continued direct breastfeeding. “Kangaroo Mother Care” is very effective in low-birth-weight babies, so Kangaroo Mother Care was initiated by the mother on the 21st day.
After 65 days of hard work by Dr. Harsh Mod (Asst. Professor, Department of Paediatrics), Resident doctors, nurses, and other staff, the baby girl was discharged from the hospital on 16th November with 1 kg 410 grams weight, which was twice the birth weight.
After a 65-day struggle with life under the expert care at Neonatal ICU of GCS Hospital, the little wonder is at home with her family, happy and blooming.
