Two labourers in Bopal have died, while one has gone missing after they entered a drainage line on Thursday to clean it.
The labourers were hired as part of a contract given by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) to lay drainage lines in the area.
As per available details, one of the labourers had entered the gutter line to clean it when he felt unwell and fell unconscious. Two others entered to rescue him but they too felt suffocated and fainted. The fire brigade was called to the rescue and two of the men were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed. The fire brigade is still trying to locate the third labourer but he is not expected to be alive.
Reports said some garbage had stuck in the drainage pipeline and it had to be removed. The labourer who first entered the drainage line to clean it was identified as one Bharatbhai who later fainted. To save him, two others Raju and one Sandeep entered the drainage line but suffered the same fate. While rescue work is still going it is being said that all three suffocated to death. The fire brigade and police were called to the spot.
Two of the labourers were removed from the drainage line but officials could not locate the third one. The two labourers who were rescued succumbed at Sola Civil Hospital where they were under treatment.
The Bopal police have booked the subcontractor for negligence.
