In response to the Gujarat High Court’s strong criticism of poor traffic management in Ahmedabad, city police launched a major crackdown on Friday targeting wrong-side driving. During the special drive, nearly 2,000 cases were registered in a single day, and fines totaling ₹33 lakh were collected.
According to a media report, the High Court had earlier pulled up the state government and Ahmedabad police for their failure to control road encroachments and traffic chaos. Acting on this, the police carried out the citywide drive against wrong-side driving, which had mostly been limited to areas like SG Highway and CG Road in the past.
This time, action was taken across various parts of Ahmedabad. Along with penalizing traffic violators, the police also cleared encroachments at multiple locations to improve road access.
A day before the drive, the High Court expressed serious concern over the rising number of fatal accidents caused by wrong-side driving. The bench of Justice A S Supehia and Justice R T Vachchhani instructed authorities to take strict action, including seizing vehicles and educating offenders about traffic laws.
