While the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) struggles to provide basic civic services, it has reportedly spent ₹244 crore in the last 10 years on security personnel and bouncers for its officials and buildings—about ₹2 crore every month.
More than 1,800 security staff and bouncers from around 12 private agencies are posted across the city at locations like Kankaria Lakefront, Sabarmati Riverfront, zonal offices, and public gardens.
There are allegations that these security contracts are designed to favour agencies linked to the ruling party, reducing fair competition and putting an extra burden on the AMC’s budget.
At the AMC headquarters in Danapith, bouncers are placed from the entrance gate up to the offices of the municipal commissioner and mayor, often making it hard for citizens to approach officials with their complaints.
A similar situation exists in AMC-run hospitals, where officials are also guarded by security staff, raising concerns about the city’s priorities as basic infrastructure issues remain unresolved.
The opposition has criticized AMC, saying the corporation is using heavy security to shield itself from public anger instead of fixing civic problems.
