Vastrapur police early on Wednesday arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly storing and transporting foreign liquor worth over ₹63,000 in a parked car, without any legal permit.
According to a media report, the accused, identified as Shailesh Singh Chauhan, a resident of Vidyanagar Flats, Keshavbagh, Vastrapur, was found in possession of 263 bottles of various brands of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) inside a white Tata Indigo car parked in the common parking lot near Gate No. 1 of the Vidyanagar Flats.
The operation was done based on a tip-off received around 1.45 am. When a police team was patrolling near the Keshavbagh area, they received credible information about a suspicious vehicle containing illegal liquor.
Upon reaching the spot around 3.15 am, the police team discovered the white Tata Indigo with Shailesh Singh seated inside. A search of the vehicle revealed cartons packed with liquor bottles of different brands, all bearing the label ‘For Sale in Rajasthan Only’. A total of 263 bottles of whiskey worth ₹63,480 was seized from the car. In addition to the liquor, police also seized a mobile phone and the car worth ₹1.5lakh.
During interrogation, Chauhan allegedly failed to produce any valid permit for transporting or possessing the liquor and admitted to storing it for illegal sale. The police have filed an FIR under various sections of the Gujarat Prohibition Act and have started an investigation.
