Twenty-one hospitals across Gujarat have been suspended from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) due to serious violations and irregularities. The action follows the Khyati Hospital scam, which prompted the state health department to step up monitoring of hospitals under the scheme.
The suspensions took place between April and June 2025—five hospitals were suspended in April, and four more in June.
According to a media report, a range of violations, including admitting patients referred from other hospitals, manipulating lab reports to claim inflated charges, and unusually high mortality rates. Some hospitals, especially those providing neonatal care, were found using high-cost treatment packages unnecessarily. Others lacked basic infrastructure, such as fire safety NOCs, CCTV in NICUs, and hygienic operation theatres. A few were also running unapproved floors without Building Use (BU) permissions. Due to the severity of these violations, some hospitals have been blacklisted for up to three years.
The suspended hospitals include:
- Christ Hospital and Gokul Hospital, Rajkot
- KP Sanghvi Hospital, Surat
- Aastha Hospital, Patan
- Dev Hospital, Chhota Udepur
- Ahmedabad Institute of Medical Services and Shaligram Multi-Speciality Hospital, Ahmedabad
- Rotary Medical and Research Centre, Gandhinagar
- Siddhi Vinayak Hospital, Tapi
The health department also found that many hospitals continue to ignore PMJAY guidelines, such as failing to display treatment information boards for patients. Moreover, several hospitals and nursing homes have yet to register under the mandatory Clinical Establishments Act.
Following the Khyati scam, action has also been taken against individuals—11 doctors have been suspended from PMJAY for their alleged involvement in unethical practices.
