The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated the demolition of an illegally constructed nine-storey building named Sana-7, built by Salim Jumma Khan Pathan near Astodia Darwaja.
According to a media report, the demolition drive began on Monday under heavy police protection, with the top three floors — including two penthouses — being brought down first. The structure is located in the Purbiya Wadi area, close to Yusuf Saiyed Garden. Prior to the demolition, the building’s electricity, water, and drainage connections were cut off.
Sana-7 was constructed in 2019 without legal permissions and houses 87 flats — around 10 units on each floor. Despite multiple warnings and notices issued under the GPMC (Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations) Act, the builder continued construction, and residents eventually moved in.
Over the past six years, AMC sealed the building four times, but each time the seals were broken and work resumed. The civic body had also sought police protection for demolition on 11 occasions — six times in 2020 and five more in 2025.
The builder had approached the Gujarat High Court in 2019 challenging AMC’s action, but no ruling has been delivered in the case for six years.
In a Legal Committee meeting held five months ago, it was recommended that disciplinary action be taken against officials who failed to act decisively despite there being no court stay. However, AMC has yet to issue a single show-cause notice or initiate any inquiry against the concerned officials.
The demolition is expected to continue over the next few days.
