Starting this Saturday, Shreyas Foundation in Ahmedabad is set to transform its lush, green campus into a vibrant weekend reading haven for students, parents, staff, and alumni. The initiative, aimed at nurturing a lifelong love for books, will allow stakeholders to immerse themselves in reading amid serene natural settings—including a cozy treehouse nestled atop a decades-old tree, shaded corners under sprawling banyan trees, and the peaceful Srirangam Amphitheater.Reading Amid NatureThe initiative, named “Vachiye, Vistarie” (Read Deeply, Grow Inwardly, Expand Outwardly), is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Navjivan Press reading movement. Every Saturday, the school will open up scenic spots like the Treehouse, Chabutaro, Vadalo, the ShreyoBharti Library, and the amphitheater for quiet, reflective reading.“Some of the most beautiful and soul-enriching parts of our campus have been opened as reading zones—inviting everyone to pause, pick up a book, and be fully present,” said Yogesh Thanki, secretary of Shreyas Foundation.A Family AffairThe reading movement also emphasizes parental involvement in cultivating reading habits among children. “To reduce screen time and develop a reading culture, it’s essential to involve families,” said Thanki. He added that while their initial reading activity within the library received limited response, many parents suggested that access to more open and relaxed spaces could make a significant difference.Community ResponseThe initiative has already received positive feedback. Jay Patel, a parent who visits the campus on Saturdays with his daughter, called it a refreshing experience. “Thanks to the teachers, my daughter has started enjoying reading. And now, being able to share that experience with her on campus, surrounded by nature, is truly special,” he said. With this move, Shreyas Foundation hopes to rekindle the joy of reading in a digital age—one peaceful Saturday at a time.
