At least 40 people were relocated to safer places in Bardoli taluka of Surat district on Sunday, as heavy rainfall continued to lash parts of Gujarat. Since June 1, a total of 3,703 people have been shifted across the state due to rain-related risks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Navsari and Valsad for Monday, forecasting very heavy rainfall. Widespread rain is expected to persist across Gujarat until July 11.
On Sunday, Dolvan in Tapi recorded the highest rainfall at 155 mm, followed by Bardoli in Surat at 125 mm. Other districts, including Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Botad, also received intense rainfall throughout the day.
“Surat district has been on alert. Nearly 40 people were relocated on Sunday,” said Surat Collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi.
According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), Vyara and Dolvan in Tapi recorded 141 mm and 135 mm of rain respectively, while Paslana in Surat and Kaprada in Valsad received 125 mm and 123 mm.
Bhiloda in Aravalli saw the highest rainfall in the state in the last 24 hours, recording 167 mm, even as 204 talukas across 33 districts received an average of 26.65 mm.
Ahmedabad city also experienced continuous rain on Sunday afternoon, logging an average of 26 mm by evening. The IMD has also warned of light thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds of 30-40 kmph, along with light to moderate rainfall in various parts of the state till July 10.
