Several areas in Ahmedabad witnessed heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, with showers lasting nearly two hours. In localities like Nikol and Odhav, nearly one inch of rain fell within an hour, leading to severe waterlogging of 1.5 to 2 feet on roads. The worst-hit area was around the Odhav fire station, where water accumulation caused major disruptions.
Between 6 am and 8 pm, the city recorded an average of 10.88 mm rainfall, pushing the season’s total to 17.18 inches. Rain began around 2 pm in Odhav, Nikol, Viratnagar, and other eastern parts of Ahmedabad, with Nikol receiving 25 mm and Odhav 16 mm within just one hour.
Despite the moderate rainfall, Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) faced public backlash as roads in Nikol and Odhav were flooded. Frustrated residents shared videos on social media, criticizing the civic body’s poor drainage preparedness.
In a separate incident around 7 pm near Revdi Bazaar in Kalupur, the artificial facade of a building collapsed onto the road, damaging an auto-rickshaw and halting traffic. Bricks from the facade scattered on the road, causing long traffic jams.
Additionally, trees were uprooted in Danapith and Dudheshwar, adding to the city’s woes. The rain, though not extreme, caused significant disruption, highlighting the lack of basic infrastructure readiness even during seasonal showers.
