In response to growing concerns over rising cases of Type-2 diabetes among children, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has issued a directive to all District Education Officers (DEOs) to implement ‘Sugar Boards’ in schools across the state.
These boards will serve as awareness tools, educating students about the sugar content in everyday foods and drinks, and encouraging healthier dietary choices.
According to GSHSEB, there has been a sharp increase in sugar-related health issues among schoolchildren, including diabetes, dental problems, and metabolic disorders. Data reveals that children aged 4–10 get up to 13% of their daily calories from sugar, and those aged 11–18 up to 15%—three times the recommended limit of 5%.
Each school is required to display a Sugar Board in a visible location. The board must include information about:
- Recommended daily sugar intake
- Sugar content in common food and beverages
- Health risks linked to excessive sugar consumption
In addition, schools must conduct seminars and workshops to further raise awareness. DEOs have been asked to ensure these measures are strictly followed.
Earlier in May, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had issued similar guidelines to its affiliated schools to promote healthier eating habits among students.
