In Ahmedabad, the sterilisation of stray dogs is handled by private agencies. Since 2021, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been paying ₹976 per dog for sterilisation and feeding. Now, a new proposal suggests increasing this rate to ₹1,650 per dog.
This change aligns with the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules-2023, under which the Animal Welfare Board of India has approved ₹1,650 as the standard rate for recognised organisations managing stray dog populations.
According to a media report, AMC seeks to assign the sterilisation work—within a ₹3 crore budget—for two years to Shri Yash Domestic Research Center and Shri People for Animals. The proposed rate marks a ₹674 hike per dog over the earlier amount.
Ahmedabad currently has an estimated 2 lakh stray dogs. In high-complaint areas, especially those reporting frequent dog bites or nuisance, AMC has launched a dog population survey. The first phase of this survey is being conducted by the Goal Foundation in one ward each from the eastern and western parts of the city.
