Traffic violators in Ahmedabad will no longer be able to delay fine payments, thanks to a new QR code-enabled system rolled out by the city’s traffic police. The updated e-challan application, part of the One Nation One Challan initiative, now allows for on-the-spot fine collection through instant QR code generation.
According to a media report, using the system, traffic police can issue an e-memo with the violator’s photograph and collect fines immediately by scanning the QR code. The system integrates seamlessly with POS machines, ensuring swift and secure transactions.
Previously, many violators avoided timely payment by pledging to pay online later—a promise that often remained unfulfilled. Some would generate online challans but postpone payment indefinitely.
Instant Payment Mechanism
The new system addresses the issue by generating a QR code valid for only 250 seconds, giving violators a narrow window to pay. This eliminates the opportunity to escape or delay payment. While traffic personnel continue to issue memos manually and through surveillance cameras, the new system strengthens enforcement.
“Only Head Constables, Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), and officers of higher ranks are authorised to collect fines using this application and QR code,” an official stated.
Alternative and Secure Payment Options
Drivers still have up to 90 days to clear their e-challans before the case is forwarded to a virtual court. For those concerned about online fraud, the traffic department has provided an alternative: violators can visit any traffic junction and use the QR code for secure payment.
“If anyone is apprehensive about paying through a payment link, they can opt to scan the QR code at traffic booths for a safe transaction within 90 days,” said DCP Safin Hasan.
