In a significant relief for small and middle-class families, the Gujarat government has announced a major concession in stamp duty charges for property transfers. For transactions carried out through allotment letters or share certificates issued by societies, associations, and non-trading corporations, the state will now collect only 20% of the original stamp duty, effectively offering an 80% waiver. This benefit has been granted under Section 9(a) of the Gujarat Stamp Act, 1958.According to the state’s revenue department, the move is aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens during property transfers. Under the new provision, only 20% of the standard duty amount, along with any applicable penalty, will be charged. However, the total payable amount — including penalties — will not exceed the original stamp duty amount that would have been applicable under the earlier rules. In line with this change, calculations related to penalties and other charges will also be revised accordingly. The upcoming official notification will clearly specify that this exemption applies exclusively to transfers made through allotment letters and share certificates by eligible entities such as cooperative housing societies, associations, and non-trading bodies.
