In a major crackdown across the state, the Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority (GUJRERA) has issued a public notice naming builders of 615 real estate projects who have failed to pay fines imposed for violations of the RERA Act and its rules.
The highest number of defaulters are from Vadodara (213), followed by Ahmedabad (107), Surat (72), Rajkot (62), Gandhinagar (52), Bhavnagar and Anand (20 each), and six from other cities.
GUJRERA has warned that if fines are not paid promptly, it will begin recovery proceedings under the Gujarat Land Revenue Code, treating the dues as government revenue. Builders may also face attachment of their properties, and their names will be published in media.
The notice also advises builders who have already paid their fines to submit proof in order to be removed from the defaulters list. The authority pointed out that many promoters have ignored repeated reminders despite being given ample time to comply.
The RERA Act, which came into effect on May 1, 2017, empowers GUJRERA to impose penalties for violations such as failure to register projects, not submitting mandatory quarterly updates, or disobeying official orders. The fines range from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000, depending on the nature and seriousness of the violation.
