New Delhi: In response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, the Government of India has initiated Operation Sindhu, a mission to evacuate Indian nationals stranded in Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 110 Indian students have been successfully evacuated in the operation’s first phase.
The students, who were located in northern Iran, were transported by road to Yerevan, Armenia, on June 17 under the coordination of Indian missions in both Iran and Armenia. A special flight carrying the evacuees departed Yerevan at 2:45 PM on June 18, with their arrival in New Delhi scheduled for the early hours of June 19.
In an official statement, the MEA emphasized that “the Government of India has been taking various steps over the last several days for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran,” citing the worsening regional situation.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared visuals of the students boarding the flight and reiterated India’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens abroad. “India accords the highest priority to the safety and security of her nationals abroad,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
