Just over an inch of rain on Monday evening was enough to flood several parts of Ahmedabad, raising serious questions about the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) pre-monsoon preparations.
The city recorded an average of 1.08 inches of rainfall, but some areas received heavier showers — Ramol saw 2.22 inches, Chakudiya Mahadev 1.69 inches, Viratnagar 1.46 inches, and Vatva 1.83 inches. Dudheshwar got 1.26 inches, while the west and south zones remained relatively dry — Bopal received only 0.14 inches, Science City 0.31 inches, and Sarkhej 0.83 inches.
Rain picked up after 4 pm and led to waterlogging in multiple areas. The Mithakhadi underpass had to be closed by 7:55 pm due to water accumulation. At the Vasna Barrage, all gates stayed shut as water levels remained stable. AMC teams monitored low-lying areas and known rain hotspots.
Tragically, a 20-year-old man, Jashraj Jagdish Gohel from Rajasthan, died after getting an electric shock from a power distribution point near the Gheekanta Metropolitan Court.
Adding to the chaos, an AMC dewatering pump vehicle got stuck in a pit near Chandkheda IOC gate, where excavation work was ongoing.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat could develop into a low-pressure system within 24 hours, possibly bringing more rain. Day temperatures are expected to drop by 3°C to 5°C Celsius
